Prices of 4K TVs continue to drop, while the offering of 1080p TVs continues to get smaller and smaller. There’s no doubting that 4K is the new standard, and with shifting standards come new opportunities. At Baylyn Media, we see the opportunity that 4k production provides, and we are elated to be able to jump on board a train that is starting to gain momentum. While 4K devices are plentiful—whether it be a TV, streaming device, or the latest computer displays—the content is a bit more difficult to find. There are a few main reasons for this, and you could help be part of the solution!

Let’s start at the beginning of the production cycle. What do you need to capture the content? Hardware. 1080p HD cameras and video cameras have been floating around for years since it became the standard. Now, with a new emerging standard requiring different recording specifications, new cameras are also required to make use of newer 4K technologies. While it was difficult and certainly saddening to usurp the camera we have been using for our 1080p video as our daily driver, the 4K mirrorless camera we replaced it with had the horsepower we needed to record in 2160p at 30 frames per second. This is the easy part, however. Unless your 1080p editing computer is built well beyond your needs, chances are you will also need to make some kind of upgrade to your computer. 4K resolution carries with it four times the pixels of 1080, meaning a lot more horsepower is needed to import, edit, and render the files.

Since the advent of 4K to the consumer market around 2013, much has changed and the technology is becoming more and more commonplace. The number of 4K TVs owned by Americans made up just 1% of TV ownership in the United States in 2014. Due to the wider availability and competitive pricing of new 4K TVs, some companies project ownership to be at least 10% by the end of this year. Long term predictions predict ownership to skyrocket up to around 50% by 2020. As ownership rates climb, more 4K content will be expected.
